Schmidt's Music - About Us

As a small business, we’re more than just a music store. Schmidt’s Music, and its team of local musicians, is deeply connected to the community we serve. We believe everyone benefits from access to music and music education!

Whether it’s helping beginners pick out their first instrument, or helping pro players find the right set up for their next performance, Schmidt’s Music is always there putting our customers and community first above all else!

Dave Schmidt

Dave Schmidt founded Schmidt’s Music in 1982 because Dave felt the school music programs in the area needed a higher quality repair service to help keep their instruments in top shape!

From there it was only natural to start offering rental instruments as well as instrument upgrade options. Dave’s friendly demeanor, and his “support band programs first” approach set a tone that helped make Schmidt’s Music become the go-to resource for band and orchestra programs in Pensacola and beyond!

Mark Duggar, Joe Boyd, and Kathleen Moran purchased the store from Dave Schmidt in the summer of 2022. All of them were long term employees who saw the impact that Schmidt’s Music had on the community, and who had developed a deep love for the store.

When Dave was looking to retire it wasn’t even a question for them — they knew they wanted to carry on Dave’s incredible legacy!

Mark got his start at Schmidt’s Music as an apprentice, hired on to help with summer repair. He has a BA in Theatre from the University of West Florida, where he focused on performance and sound design/engineering. His time as a stage hand and sound engineer gave him a unique set of problem-solving skills that proved useful when learning to repair instruments. After being hired full-time in 2018, Mark quickly demonstrated talents not just for repair, but for organization and leadership. Now, in addition to fixing instruments, he is one of the owners of Schmidt’s Music.

Kathleen moved to Pensacola from the Florida Keys to take care of her aging parents. When she arrived she saw an ad in the news paper for a job as a bookkeeper at Schmidt's Music. Her experience as a bookkeeper, paired with her friendliness, made her a natural fit for the store. She's always fond of saying she moved her on a Saturday, interviewed for the job on Monday, and started work on Tuesday. The rest is history. Now, as an owner, Kathleen is excited to be a part of the next chapter of Schmidt's Music.

Joe began his journey as a performing musician, until he visited Schmidt’s Music when he needed a repair on his trumpet. After seeing the skill and craftsmanship involved in instrument repair, he decided to change course from performer to repair technician. After receiving his certificate in repair from Minnesota State College Southeast, Joe returned to Pensacola and began working at Schmidt’s Music. His knowledge, skill, and dedication naturally led him to become the shop foreman, as well as one of the current owners of the store.
